    Lesson Objectives:

    Students should be able to

    • List different careers in STEM fields
    • Explain different pathways to enter a STEM field
    • Describe who STEM workers can be and what they look like

This enrichment lesson is geared towards students grades 9-12.

    • Engage

STEM careers aren't just for other people, you can succeed in a STEM Career too! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Within each of those fields is a wide variety of career options that are suited to a variety of interests and life experiences.

Join us as we introduce you to Carol Davey, Managing Field Director at the Ohio Environmental Council. Carol is a native of southeastern Ohio hailing from Cheshire, which no longer exists because it was bought and demolished in 2002 as part of a pollution and public health settlement. She channeled her passion for environmental and social justice work into a career that allows her to return to her community and work towards a tomorrow where homes and communities are not lost due to environmental injustices.

After you watch Carol's story, we'll ask some questions to help you take stock of your thoughts about STEM careers. What type of person do you think can go into a STEM career? Do you think you can?

    • Combining Inputs and Outputs

Hopefully you've found some potential STEM careers that you're interested in, and that's a great start! But it's just the first step of your journey, and you may be overwhelmed and wondering what to do next.

Well, the next step is to make a plan! Even if you don't have a specific career in mind, thinking about how to further explore your field of interest will still benefit you. The first year or so of college will be what is known as General Education credits, which will be the same across all majors. This is a good time to take classes that allow you to explore different aspects of your interests. For many colleges you don't even have to declare a major right away.

Of course, college isn't the only way to get into a STEM career! If you already have determined your field of interest and have narrowed it down to a couple career options, then a technical school might be a good fit!

So let's make a plan! Let's take the careers or fields of interest that you found with Bekkah in the last activity and figure out a path forward.
